Last week, a follower messaged me from the U.S.
He said, “Wuyu, I work hard every single day, but life still feels like a constant struggle. Is my fate just bad? Why does the American Dream feel so far away?”
This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this. And no, it’s not your fault.
Let’s talk about it — not from politics or economics, but from a Taoist lens.

🕰️ When a Nation’s Luck Runs Dry
In Taoism, we believe that fate isn’t just personal — entire nations have their own destiny. Just like people have a birth chart (BaZi), countries too follow cycles of rise and fall.
When the “cosmic timing” of a nation is no longer aligned, it becomes increasingly difficult for individuals — especially the everyday people — to succeed, no matter how hard they try.
Sound familiar?
That’s because what you’re feeling is real. You’re working hard… in a time that no longer supports it.
📜 History Repeats in 300-Year Cycles
In Chinese history, there’s a pattern: major dynasties last around 300 years. During their peak, scholars, merchants, artists, and thinkers flourish. After that, everything begins to decline — and even the most talented people struggle to thrive.
Why? Because their environment, their timing, no longer matches their potential.
Now think about the U.S.
When was the golden age of the “American Dream”? The post-war boom, the rise of innovation, Silicon Valley — a few glorious decades.
But lately? You feel it too. The energy has shifted.
😔 It’s Not Laziness — It’s Mismatch
Older generations often say, “Young people just don’t work as hard anymore.”
But the truth is, young people are trying. The problem is: effort no longer guarantees reward.
In Taoism, we call this going against the current. When a tide turns, swimming harder doesn’t help — it just wears you out.
🌀 When Leaders Ignore the Tao, Everyone Pays
Here’s the hard truth:
When a country goes against the natural order — the Tao — the universe responds. And the response isn’t always gentle.
But the ones who suffer aren’t the decision-makers. It’s the ordinary folks — like Tom — who bear the cost. The workers. The dreamers. The ones trying to stay afloat.
🧭 What Can You Do?
Taoism doesn’t say, “Give up.” It says, “Align.”
When times are tough:
- Save your energy.
- Watch the signs.
- Don’t force what isn’t ready.
- And most of all, honor your own rhythm within the chaos.

Sometimes, survival itself is wisdom.
When the world rushes forward blindly, walking slowly might be the most powerful thing you can do.
